I'm sure they would be much happier in a safe place in Africa, than being driven around in trucks here. But from what I saw, the keepers were quite respectful of them, and treated them nicely, they didn't use violence at all, but talked a lot to the elephants instead. And there were 3 of them, so they weren't too lonely.
But I really don't know anything about the needs of African elephants, or how to tell if they are sad or not.

Just on a random elephant note, there used to be one (she might still be there) in the Calgary zoo... if you said her real name, instead of her nickname, she would fling poo at you.

Wow, I haven't seen a circus with animals in ages. They should have a circus with freak shows again. Now that's entertainment!
