Courtney Love
While In My Gut the Creature Writhes and Snarls and Tells Me What I Need
by Tim Byrnes

Five Star: A look at albums that are so good that they impress even the most cynical of critics. Very few albums are superior enough to obtain a five star rating but occasionally a band slips through the river of mediocrity that is the modern music industry and they produce an album that restores our faith in the future of rock! This series is a look at such albums.

Sometimes the best man for a job is a woman. Especially when the job is saving rock and roll and the woman is Courtney Love. Part rock star, part spectator sport, Love continues her celebration of self (the pure essence of all great rock and roll, by the way) with the release of this, her first solo album. From the barrage of electric guitars tearing down the old MTV jingle that opens the first single "Mono", it's clear that Love comes to town to bury, not to praise.

"'Is this the part in the book that you wrote where I gotta come save the day/did you miss me?", she sings, knowing and not caring how many people that line will infuriate. The song is carried along on a wave of righteous rage, the guitars and drums all thrust and trajectory bringing the noise back to the garage by way of the VIP room at Planet Hollywood. What gets lost in all the hype around the drug busts, the assumed insanity, the ridiculous murder theories, the raging egoism, the Hollywood dalliances is the fact that all these things are normal currency in rock and roll, and besides, it's none of our business and has little, if not nothing, to do with the actual music.

Which rocks harder than Chinese arithmetic.

On "But Julian, I'm a Little Older Than You" Love asserts her primacy in a male dominated music world, where row upon row of tattooed love boys with serious Mother issues have been topping the heap for some time now. I love the Strokes as much as anybody, really, but their Carnaby Street on Ecstasy recreation of the Sixties, while much fun, holds no candlepower next to the force of nature combination of righteous anger, raw nerve and chops represented on this CD. I especially love the way she snarls "...and I know where you live." The animal speaks, indeed.

This is the work of a woman clearly unafraid and unconcerned as to what me, you or our arbitrary rules of "purism" think about her or her work. She loves herself enough, she doesn't need us and I think that's what pisses most people off about her. Maybe we really are just jealous of her. Her freedom and complete self-acceptance. Self obsessed? Of course she is, name me one performer who isn't. Crazed and unhinged, Love approaches her place in rock and roll as a matter of life and death, and really what else is there?

But for all her considerable myth making (again, the pure essence of all great rock and roll), Love also has the capacity for breath taking honesty. "All the Drugs", "Hold On to Me" and "Uncool" all speak in a knowing voice of the physical, spiritual and emotional breakdowns that she's ( and by extension, we're) perhaps inches away from. Such fearless and searching moral inventories tend to cast shadowy doubt on our own preconceptions of self and, as a result are dismissed out of hand due to discomfort. Or maybe we just hate women.

Screw the psychology (after you've thought about it a while, maybe) and turn up the volume. "America's Sweetheart" is a wild cry in the night from the black and beautiful heart of rock and roll. If this isn't the Album of the Year, then I can't wait to hear what is. And, Courtney, if you're reading this, I don't care if you don't care what I think, I'm telling you anyway. Uncompromising? Yes. Uncontrollable? Yes. Uncool? Never in my book, sweetheart.

my guess at "never gonna be the same" lyrics [02 Feb 2004|10:21pm]

awful_cherry
cut me off today???
should've stayed anyway
you lied
and everywhere I dream
nothing came between
i died
????
i will not be for you
doggone's down

never gonna be the same
never gonna be the same
never gonna be the same

and if you want water
and if you want food
if you want shelter
I cannot come over to you
and if you want love now
or a needle and a spoon
you gotta show a little faith in me now baby
I can't come over to you
It's never gonna be the same
It's never gonna be the same

God, come down
and if you want out
sitting by the bay
well the sun went down tomorrow
it will not come up today
and if you want love now
to ravish your arms so cruel
Even if the god is me now baby
I cannot come over to you
it's never gonna be the same
she drew? me anyway
she lied
you gotta show a little faith
you're owned by the cross you made
what goes up it must go down, down, down, god

And if I want fame now
or the glory of the wound
if I want my name emblazened on every lie I know
And If I want a christ ??
a messiah by my side
I can't believe in anything
I know that mary lied
The sun came up today
I could've gone heal/here away
Oh, mary lied
do you know?
do you feel it?
do you feel me?

yeah and if you want madness
and if you want whats pure
well you gotta come over to me baby
my life doesn't reach to you
and if you want love so
unconditional and real
you gotta ride that black horse baby
through the depths of hell that I've been
follow/throw? me away
to end the war?
I would be the same
The strongest one's name
Through the the valley of life
I'm gonna be the same
good night, my life, good night, good night
oh you'll never be the same

If anyone has any other ideas, post them. I'm sure these are wholly inaccurate.

Would Be Journalist Tries to Chase Down Courtney Love [28 Jan 2004|05:50pm]

violetcandydoll
Singer/Actress Courtney Love
BEVERLY HILLS — A court hearing for singer/actress Courtney Love, who faces two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, today was postponed to Feb. 11 when a judge said additional investigation was needed.
Love met with Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox in his chambers before a brief court appearance.

Fox then said the hearing would be delayed until next month because of "certain issues as it relates to an investigation of this matter."

Love, 39, has pleaded innocent to charges of illegal possession of two painkillers, hydrocodone and oxycodone. Authorities say the painkillers were discovered after Love was taken to a hospital on Oct. 2.

Police said they found Love outside of an ex-boyfriend's house, where she had allegedly broken the windows that day.

She is charged separately with a misdemeanor for allegedly being under the influence of a narcotic.

Outside the courthouse, where a would be journalist was caught on tape trying to chase down the actress.
Meanwhile, there was a bizarre scene outside of the Beverly Hills courthouse following the hearing when self-proclaimed documentarian Richard Lee tried to chase down a car in which Love was riding.

Lee, who hosts a cable access show from Seattle, claims Love plotted to kill her late husband Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Seattle grunge band Nirvana, who committed suicide.

Lee verbally accosted Love, then barely escaped injury when the sedan sped off.

"I'm a real journalist, asking real questions," Lee shouted as he was upbraided for his conduct by other journalists and cameramen who covered the hearing.

Lee also showed up at Love's last court appearance in December, making the same claims.

Courtney Love Album Preview: America's Sweetheart Takes On Male Rock Pantheon

Courtney Love once promised that her debut solo album, America's Sweetheart, would have "one song about a fictional boy who saves fictional rock and roll in a fictional town." Change "boy" to "girl" and the premise remains the same.

Love's ironically titled album, set for a February 10 release, is as much about herself as about the state of rock, with a thematic structure similar to Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville. Love, however, isn't simply answering one particular album, as Phair did with the Rolling Stones classic Exile on Main St. Sweetheart, even more audaciously, takes on the entire male rock pantheon, offering Love herself as its redeemer.

"Hey, God, you owe me one more song/ So I can prove to you/ That I'm so much better than him," she wails in the opening battle cry, "Mono," whose intro riff echoes the sound of early MTV promos.

The layers of meaning evoked by the title and lyrics of the song are purposeful: They suggest being on one's own, the recording process, kissing and disease — motifs that repeat throughout the album.

The "him" remains unidentified, but one can't help but imagine she's referring to either her late husband, Kurt Cobain, and to the rumors that the Nirvana frontman had a hand in writing Hole's Live Through This, or to Eric Erlandson, her main songwriting partner in Hole. Of course, Love has also claimed the song is actually a "Fred [Durst] murder fantasy."

Or, as she later hinted, about Eminem. Or even Jack White. In the end, the real "he" behind the song is irrelevant; it's every He.

Love drives that point home throughout the rest of this fast-moving album, citing past and present punk and rock heroes: Black Flag's "Rise Above" and the Damned's "Smash It Up" in "Mono"; the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties" in "Sunset Strip"; Prince's "Erotic City," the Ramones' "Pinhead" and the Clash's "London Calling" in "But Julian, I'm a Little Older Than You" (whose title refers to Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas); and the self-explanatory and intentionally misspelled "The Zeplin Song" ("Why does the song remain the same?" she quite reasonably inquires).

The list goes on, and Love never fails to note where she stands in all of this. Like a boasting, battling MC, she promises hope (she's going to "come and save the day"), threatens danger (she knows "where you live" and she's "coming for you") and brags that when all is said and done, she's still going to be the best you'll ever have ("You'll never ever ever f--- like me/ So baby why why do you even try?").

Love's at her best when she links her bravado to raging riffs, as in "Hello." You almost believe she'll deliver the goods when she sings, "You're going to hear the lost chord tonight." That chord's a myth, of course, and not every promise can be fulfilled.

America's Sweetheart embraces other contradictions as well. "Hold on to Me" is about vulnerability, and she has said it was inspired by the time she stayed up all night scribbling poetry with Russell Crowe, broke down in tears and had to be comforted in his arms. Yet the song is sung as though she were the strong one offering comfort rather than needing it.

"Sunset Strip," meanwhile, concerns a girl who's either moving or about to kill herself. It mourns her position at first, then celebrates her self-destruction and "no tomorrow," defiantly listing all the reasons she pops pills: "I got pills 'cause I'm bored/ I got pills 'cause you're dead/ I got pills 'cause you're not the one".

The bottom-heavy, bluesy "All the Drugs" takes the addiction theme further, as if the layered guitars' texture imparts meaning to the damage and delight implied by "all the drugs in the world."

Love's always more impressive as a banshee than as a sweetheart — even she realizes this, swiping at her most tender moment on the album, a nostalgic power ballad, by giving it the title "Uncool." She's a fascinatingly messy bundle of contradictions, a destroyer and creator in equal parts, who gives voice to things we dare not say.

America's Sweetheart may not save rock and roll — but can anything?

QUOTE
11/15/2003
Courtney, Whitney, Rush
Courtney Love is the white Whitney Houston. Houston had a considerably higher profile, making a splash in the 80s with her pyramid perm and octaroon beauty, she looked white enough to be unthreatening to the dominant culture, yet still was a descendent of R&B royalty. When she sang the powerhouse hit "I'm Every Woman" we all believed her. She made love with Kevin Costner on the big screen, the whitest dude outside of the John Birch Society, and made a huge hit out of "My Bodyguard," not to be confused with the brilliant '70s film starring Chris Makepeace. Her follow-up film, "The Preacher's Wife," was not so successful, possibly because she was paired with Denzel Washington and in the unwritten laws of race in Hollywood, her "Imitation of Life" identity became tarnished, as in her cinematic union with another Black actor, made her darker by proxy. Whitney didn't get better, as she started on a downward spiral, and unraveling of her 'passable' status that was unfairly begun by her marriage to a self-diagnosed 'bad boy' with his own 'prerogative,' Bobby Brown, a marginally criminal drug addict, who happened to be a Black man, making the American public realize that in fact, Whitney, despite all her attempts, unintentional and unfairly presented, that she was not white, and thereafter fell from grace in the glare of the media spotlight. Now she is considered a visual joke, a train wreck. All her glorious talent seems to have not made a dent in the creepy culture vulture den and there is never anything to report any longer about her except for her inexplicable forays into Middle Eastern countries and bailing her husband out of jail.

Love, also of inestimable talent, is slightly different in her history, yet she is considered a nutcase of the highest order in the same Whitney-esque fashion. She shows up and is photographed as unflatteringly as possible time and time again, emaciated from drugs and misquoted to the point of mania, in order to punish the fact that she is a successful woman, despite her husband's tragic end and her own personal lifetime bout with narcotics.

Nirvana's Kurt Cobain is without a doubt one of music's most influential figures and his legacy will live forever in the annals of rock history, but in the talent department, Love is certainly no slouch. Her band, Hole, is a magnificent display of female angst and sexual predatory power. I love Courtney because she is unapologetically herself and intimidatingly intelligent despite all the media attempts to make her less so. Her latest war with the former members of Nirvana are a good example of how the media will immediately side with the boys against her, as she is vilified, considered a shrill, unbelievable harpie. It is often speculated "If he had to be married to her, no wonder he shot himself in the head." Facts notwithstanding, no one was willing to side with her, in the tug of war of unreleased tracks, Kurt's farewell to a cruel world. By rights, as executor of Cobain's estate, Love owns the music. She may not have written the songs, she may not have been a supermodel rock wife, she did drugs with Kurt, but she also was trying to get him into detox. Love desperately tried to save Kurt's life. Kurt did not want help, and as we now know, did not want to be Kurt anymore. Cobain's music lives on, even if he is no longer on the earth, and Love is responsible for the maintenance and respectable distribution of her late husband's legacy.

The latest Courtney conundrum has her facing possible sentencing and the loss of her daughter with Cobain, Frances Bean. The drugs she is accused of possessing are Hydrocondone and Oxycontin, the exact same deadly combination that got Rush Limbaugh in such trouble a mere five weeks ago. She brilliantly quipped, "It wasn't like I was shoplifting or anything." Of course, the media spin on it was that she was just being her loony Vagina Dentata self, and what could anyone expect from her really. So if we prosecute the abusers of drugs, why is it not done with equal measure? Rush Limbaugh, on the opposite side of the political spectrum, did the same drugs, likely, more of them, at least according to the sources that he procured them from. Why does Rush not face the same predicament? What is the difference? The inequality here is unspeakably clear. Rush, once out of rehab will have a job waiting for him as the highest rated radio talk show host in America. Most likely, this scandal will make his popularity soar, as more will tune in just to see if he will fall back off the pharmaceutical wagon again. Why are we threatening to take away Courtney Love's child, as Eminem proudly displays a tattoo of a Vicodin pill on his arm? Double standards rule, even in counterculture, where they are supposedly above that, which makes the whole shebang all the more criminal. Free Courtney. Maybe get her another nanny, but free Courtney.
