Speak - Laurie Halse Anderson

Melinda is just enters highschool with no friends once so ever. Her old group of pals are still giving her the cold shoulder or what not for calling the cops at a end of the summer party. There was a lot of underage drinking and chaos there; but that is not why Melinda called. She could never find a way to talk to her friends, parents, or teachers about what happened so she decides to hardly speak at all.

This book brings you through Melinda's tough freshmen year as a misunderstood outcast. The difficulties she goes through keeping such a dark secret inside, and how she handles being in the middle of such a tough situation.

This book is excellent! I loved how it kept you wondering why Melinda was so afraid to speak, and what really happened at the party all the way through. Many people can relate to a peice of Melinda whether it is the difficulty of trying to fit in, or the conflict of hiding something that really shouldn't be. I give it four out of five stars!

Rule of the bone by Russell Banks.

It's a story about a drug-addicted highschool drop out trying to find himself. After he's thrown out of his house for drug abuse his goes through an amazing series of adventures.

Almost everything about this book is hilarious and perfect. The ending was a little off, the author must have gotten tired of writing, see as how the book is more than 300 pages, but the ending is still somewhat good.

Some parts of the story were long and somewhat boring, but everything is entwined so the boring parts lead into fantastic parts. Mostly, the long, drawn out parts is when the main character's explaining something about himself, the people around him, etc.

Russell Banks' characterization and language made you really believe you were talking to a drug-addicted teenager, I laughed a lot. There's a lot of sex, violence and swearing, which is a plus in my book.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vgas [14 Jun 2005|08:26pm]

seren
by Hunter S Thompson. This is the account of Thompson's trip to Las Vegas to cover the Mint 400 race for a sporting magazine and then to find the American Dream. He takes with him a friend he refers to as "his attorney" and a vast amount of "heinous chemicals". Or, to put it another way, "almost every type of drug known to civilised man since 1544 A.D.". It's 1972 and the press and authorities are starting to seriously worry about the amount of drugs floating about in American society. Though it would seem that most of it was with Hunter Thompson and his friend!

I didn't expect to like this book much as the whole drug culture thing doesn't really interest me (even though I was around in the 1970's!). But it was funny from the first page, had me laughing at his matter-of-fact retelling of the most bizarre drug-induced hallucinations. To cap it all, Hunter Thompson and the attorney were hired to cover a conference on drugs for assorted senior police officials.

One reading of this would be enough to put anyone off drugs for life. It's the funniest thing I've read in ages and I do reccomend it. It was made into a movie, starring Johnny Depp as Hunter Thompson, or Raoul Duke as he sometimes calls himself.

Even if you have all ready seen the movie I suggest you read this book. I read it in one day because I simply just couldn't put it down. I give it two thumbs up AND five stars.

Welcome to [info]book_reviews. It's Caleida's official book community. I've decided not to the limit the community strictly to just book reviews. I welcome all things involving books, writers and reading.

The rules are posted in the [info]book_reviews userinfo and at the end of this post. The rules are short and sort-of to the point. If anyone thinks I should add anything, then speak up.

Otherwise, enjoy yourself! :)
